National Ph.D. Meeting
Bologna, Italy · 25-27 March 2024
The joint ABCD SIBBM 2024 National Ph.D. Meeting is an exciting three-day event that this year will happen in Bologna. The meeting is designed to bring together Ph.D. students who work on research related to cellular and molecular biology. The Ph.D. Meeting provides a friendly environment for Ph.D. students to present their research proposal, as well as intermediate results, and to discuss them with experts and peers of Ph.D. students in the same field. In addition, as in previous years, both the selection of the two keynote speakers and the oral presentations are organized by a committee of four Ph.D. students themselves.
The main goals of this meeting are to provide an opportunity for Ph.D. students to:
If you are a Ph.D. student, you should not miss this opportunity!!!
If you are a group leader, take advantage of this opportunity to intercept your future postdoc!
We look forward to seeing you in Bologna!

I studied Biotechnology at the University of Rome La Sapienza (Italy) and moved my first steps in the academic research world at the Regina Elena Cancer Institute. I later moved to Madrid (Spain) to perform my PhD studies at the The Spanish National Cancer Institute (CNIO), in the lab of prof. Mariano Barbacid, one of the “fathers” of the most potent human oncogenes, RAS. There I studied the cell of origin of non small cell lung cancer using KRAS-mutant genetically engineered mouse models. After obtaining my PhD, I joined the group of Prof. René Bernards at the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI), in December 2013, to cultivate my interests in translational research. My work has been mainly focused on the discovery of new synthetic lethal interactions for the treatment of K-RAS mutant tumors, in particular pancreatic cancer. I am fascinated by the complex signaling networks that cells use to dictate their actions and fates, and how oncogenic mutations can hijack them. I consider myself a RAS, but more in general a signaling person/scientist, and I like to use this knowledge to provide preclinical evidence of effective therapeutic combinations and to facilitate their translation into early phase clinical studies. I also love to talk to students
Shukry James Habib is an Associate Professor at the department of
Biomedical Sciences at the University of Lausanne. He leads a
multidisciplinary research team at the intersection of stem cell
biology, advanced imaging, biophysics and tissue engineering.
Shukry pursued his undergraduate and Master degrees in Israel at
the Technion and Tel-Aviv university, respectively. He obtained his
PhD from the lab of Prof. Walter Neupert at the Ludwig Maximilian
University (LMU) of Munich, Germany. He carried out postdoctoral
research at Stanford University, California, USA in the lab of Prof.
Roel Nusse. He was also a member of the visiting programme at Janelia Farm of the Howard
Hughes medical institute, USA, hosted by the Nobel prize laureate Prof. Eric Betzig.
In 2014, Shukry received the Sir Henry Dale Fellowship (Wellcome Trust and Royal Society)
and established his lab at the Centre for Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine at King’s
College London. His research culminated in several key discoveries in regenerative medicine,
numerous publications, and a patent. The research of the Habib lab was featured in over
107 news articles and in a televised coverage by CBS-news.
Shukry received numerous awards and honours including the fellowships: Minerva (Max-
Plank Society), EMBO, DFG, Siebel scholar, London Advanced Therapies award. Shukry is a
member of the UK regenerative Medicine platform (£9 million funding) and is an associate
editor of the Journal of Immunology and Regenerative Medicine. Shukry is often involved in
public engagement including public talks at Pint of Science and was a member of the judging
panel of the Science Book Prize 2019, Royal Society.
